Your hikes and rides are in Strava, Garmin Connect or Komoot, and you want them on your own WordPress site, with a map and an elevation profile that you control. First export the file, then show it with the free WP GPX Maps plugin. The menus of these apps change from time to time, so the names below can be slightly different on your screen.
Strava
- An activity you recorded: open it on strava.com in a browser (the phone app has no export), click the menu with the three dots and choose Export GPX. Export Original gives the file of your device, often a FIT file, with heart rate and cadence.
- A route: open it on strava.com and use the export or download button of the route (GPX).
- All your activities: Settings > My Account > Download or Delete Your Account, then request the archive. You get an email with a zip of all your files.
Garmin Connect
- An activity: open it on connect.garmin.com, click the gear icon at the top right and choose Export Original. You get a zip with the FIT file of your watch or bike computer: unzip it and upload the .fit file. It keeps everything the device recorded, also heart rate, cadence and temperature, and WP GPX Maps reads it directly.
- Export to GPX is in the same menu. Use it if you prefer GPX, but on very long activities the GPX export can fail or come out almost empty: the FIT file always works.
- A course you planned: open it in Training & Planning > Courses and export it as GPX or FIT.
Komoot
- A tour (planned or recorded): open it on komoot.com, click the download button or the menu with the three dots, and choose the GPX file.
- In the app: open the tour, tap the three dots at the top right and choose the GPX export.
- If the GPX option is not available, Komoot may ask you to unlock the region of the tour first.
Other apps and devices
Almost every app can export GPX: look for “export”, “share” or “download” in the menu of the activity. Wahoo and most bike computers save FIT files, Polar and Suunto offer GPX or TCX, Google Earth and Google My Maps give KML. WP GPX Maps accepts all of them: GPX, FIT, TCX or KML.
Before you publish: your home address
A track that starts at your front door shows everyone where you live. Strava and Garmin can hide the start of your activities on their own sites, but the exported file still contains it. If needed, cut the first and last few hundred meters with a free GPX editor such as gpx.studio before uploading the file.
Put it on your site
Upload the file in the Media Library and add the GPX Map block: step by step in How to add a GPX track to WordPress. This snowshoe hike was recorded with a watch and uploaded as it came out of the export, colored by speed:
Map of the route “From Strava, Garmin or Komoot to your WordPress site”: 8,55 km, 1.609 m of climbing and 1.600 m of descent, elevation between 1.517 m and 1.822 m, time 02:22:40. It is a loop that starts and ends at 45.87331, 11.80176 (latitude, longitude).
Moving time: 02:14:12
Why your own site and not just a link to the app? The page is yours: it stays online even if you change app, it is found by search engines with your words, it can show more tracks together, and visitors do not need an account. And if you worry about privacy and cookie banners, see a GDPR-friendly alternative to Komoot and Strava embeds.
