GPX file does not exist upon download

Hi,

I have just created a page with at series of GPS tracks. (http://turglede.org/helgeland-gps-tracks/)
They turn out correct in my MapSource, then I upload them and add the shortcode to the page. Here they show up correct as well.

However – if I right-click and “Save link as…” FireFox downloads a file that looks like an HTML file, and IE tells me the file “… couldn’t be downloaded” whereas Chrome says “No file found”.
If I just click on the link I get a “Sorry, no such page”.

Looking at the backend the files reside perfectly well in the \wp-content\uploads\gpx\ directory.

What am I doing wrong here?

Where are your uploaded files located?
Are they inside of wp-content/uploads/.. or somewhere else?

That gpx should be inside /wp-content/uploads/gpx/Helgeland_20130525.gpx

That is where they are. And that is one of the thing that confuses me.

The file should work, right? Otherwise there would be no track on the map, I assume.
When I DL the file using FTP it still looks OK.

I do not believe it is the plugin that is messing things up. Others would probably have reacted to that. I am just hoping for some hints on what to look for.

I have tried with two different themes to see if the theme ruined it, but it was not.

It’s strange, You might have some restrictions in your .htaccess

Hmmm… that somewhat beyond me. 🙁
I am trying to read up on .htaccess but am not sure what to do.

Maybe I just remove the DL link or create a direct link manually.

I’m having exactly the same issue since I moved hosting providers, users are presented with the message:
SERVER ERROR
404 – File or directory not found.
The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

My download links are manually coded as I offer both a 50 point and 250 point GPX trackfile for download to cater for different device capabilities.

My GPX files are located on the same server in: /wp-content/uploads/gpx/

Site is hosted on an IIS7 Windows platform

I’ve checked my .htaccess at the site level and there’s no references there to the directory in there. I can’t find anything obvious in my server config that may be blocking access. Both the IUSR, IIS_USRS and SYSTEM users have read access to the directory.

Hi Eddie, can you set temporarily Everyone permission on these files?
Is there a mime type set for the .gpx extension?

Hi Max

You legend! 10 minutes to respond to my query and you came up with the right suggestion first time.

First thing I checked was the MIME type and there was no entry for .gpx in the IIS settings.
I created a new entry in the IIS MIME type listings for .gpx and used the MIME type of text/xml, that made the text of the file appear in the browser when the link was clicked.
I then changed the MIME type to application/octet-stream and now when the link is cicked the user is presented with a ‘file save as’ box, exactly what I wanted.

Thanks so much for awesome support, it’s a great plugin.
P.s I did suggest a additional feature on wordpress.org that would make the plugin perfect for me, download the GPX directly to the users connected device 😉
