Since version 1.11 WP GPX Maps draws 3D maps for free with MapLibre, open source and without any account or API key. This is the Alta Via degli Eroi, a 16 km loop on the ridges of Monte Grappa, with 3D terrain, shaded relief and fog on the horizon:
Map of the route “Free 3D trail maps with MapLibre, no API key”: 16,27 km, 1.181 m of climbing and 1.137 m of descent, elevation between 1.305 m and 1.790 m, time 04:19:25. It is a loop that starts and ends at 45.89148, 11.82181 (latitude, longitude).
Max elevation: 1791 m
Total climbing: 1181 m
The same terrain with the hiking map of OpenTopoMap and the mountains twice as high (exaggeration), on Trail 151 from San Liberale to the top of Monte Grappa:
Map of the route “Free 3D trail maps with MapLibre, no API key”: 6,49 km, 1.236 m of climbing and 88 m of descent, elevation between 606 m and 1.753 m, time 01:53:52. It starts at 45.86700, 11.83435 and ends at 45.87277, 11.80264 (latitude, longitude).
The shaded relief also works on a flat map, here on the light Positron style:
Map of the route “Free 3D trail maps with MapLibre, no API key”: 4,38 km, 145 m of climbing and 376 m of descent, elevation between 1.317 m and 1.580 m, time 01:13:54. It starts at 45.91689, 11.84247 and ends at 45.89153, 11.82184 (latitude, longitude).
Hold the right mouse button (or use two fingers) to tilt and rotate the view, and change the map style with the menu in the corner. In the block settings choose MapLibre as map engine, then the style, the 3D terrain, the shaded relief and the fog; in the shortcode use engine=maplibre hillshade=true fog=true. New sites use MapLibre by default.
