Switching from WP Trip Summary to WP GPX Maps

WP Trip Summary adds to each post a box with the technical data of the trip (length, climbing, difficulty…) and the GPS track on a map. On wordpress.org it now shows a warning that it has not been tested with the latest three major releases of WordPress. WP GPX Maps shows the same track with an elevation profile linked to the map and a summary that it measures from the file by itself, and it is actively maintained. This guide moves your trips one post at a time.

What changes

  • The track: in WP Trip Summary it is uploaded in a box of the post editor and kept by the plugin. In WP GPX Maps it is a normal file of the Media Library, shown with the GPX Map block or the [sgpx] shortcode.
  • The numbers (distance, climbing and descent, highest and lowest point, time) are measured from the track: you do not type them any more.
  • Information you typed by hand, like difficulty, bike type or the best season, is not a field of WP GPX Maps: keep it as a short table or list in the post, above or below the map.
  • The type of trip (hiking, cycling…) can become an Activity of WP GPX Maps: every activity has its own page listing its routes.

Before you start

  • Make a backup of the site.
  • Install and activate WP GPX Maps. Keep WP Trip Summary active until all the posts are moved.
  • Get your track files. If you still have the original GPX or KML files on your computer, use them. If not, they are on your server, in wp-content/uploads/wp-trip-summary/tracks (download them with FTP or the file manager of your host; older versions of the plugin kept them in its own folder in wp-content/plugins/wp-trip-summary).

Move a post

  1. Upload the track file of the post in Media > Add New.
  2. Open the post, add a GPX Map block where you want the map and pick the file. Turn on the summary in the sidebar to show distance, climbing and time.
  3. Copy the information you typed in the trip summary box (difficulty, notes) into a table or list block.
  4. If the post had the [abp01_trip_summary_viewer] shortcode, delete it.
  5. In the WP Trip Summary box of the post, remove the track and the trip data, so the old box no longer appears next to the new map. Then update the post and check it.

When every post is moved, deactivate and delete WP Trip Summary.

This is what a moved trip looks like, with the summary measured from the file:

Map of the route “Switching from WP Trip Summary to WP GPX Maps”: 4,38 km, 145 m of climbing and 376 m of descent, elevation between 1.317 m and 1.580 m, time 01:13:54. It starts at 45.91689, 11.84247 and ends at 45.89153, 11.82184 (latitude, longitude).

Total distance: 4.38 km
Max elevation: 1580 m
Min elevation: 1315 m
Total climbing: 145 m
Total descent: 376 m
Total time: 01:13:54
