Lf Hiker was made for hikers, like WP GPX Maps: GPX files from the Media Library, a map and an elevation profile. On wordpress.org it now shows a warning that it has not been tested with the latest three major releases of WordPress. If you are looking for a maintained alternative, WP GPX Maps uses the same files, adds a route summary, FIT, TCX and KML files, a block for the editor and tracks colored by grade or speed. This guide moves your maps one post at a time.
Before you start
- Make a backup of the site.
- Install and activate WP GPX Maps from Plugins > Add New. Keep Lf Hiker active until all the posts are moved, so no page is left with a bare shortcode.
- Your GPX files are already in the Media Library, and WP GPX Maps uses them as they are.
1. Find the posts with a Lf Hiker map
In Posts > All Posts search for lfh-gpx (and do the same in Pages).
2. Replace the shortcode
A Lf Hiker map looks like this:
[lfh-gpx src=https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/my-hike.gpx color=darkgreen width=6]A trail in the Dolomites[/lfh-gpx]
The same map with WP GPX Maps:
[sgpx gpx="/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/my-hike.gpx" mlinecolor="#006400" summary=true]
Or, in the block editor, delete the shortcode and add a GPX Map block, then pick the same file from the list. The title between the Lf Hiker tags can become a normal heading or paragraph above the map.
| Lf Hiker | WP GPX Maps |
|---|---|
src | gpx: the address of the same file (the full address works, or just the part from /wp-content/ on) |
color | mlinecolor, as a color code like #006400 |
Several lfh-gpx in one map | One map with the files separated by commas: gpx="/wp-content/uploads/a.gpx,/wp-content/uploads/b.gpx", one color each with a legend |
[lfh-map] to start a new map | Not needed: every [sgpx] is its own map |
| Elevation and distance units | uom (meters, feet, miles…) or the default in Settings > WP GPX Maps |
| (none) | summary=true for distance, climbing and time; colorby="grade" to color the track by grade |
3. Check and clean up
Open each post you changed and check the map. When the search for lfh- finds no post any more, deactivate and delete Lf Hiker.
This is what a moved post can look like, with the track colored by grade:
Map of the route “Switching from Lf Hiker to WP GPX Maps”: 7,07 km, 413 m of climbing and 621 m of descent, elevation between 1.556 m and 1.788 m, time 01:43:31. It starts at 45.87349, 11.80156 and ends at 45.91678, 11.84222 (latitude, longitude).
Total climbing: 413 m
